I am one of those who feel that individual registered social landlords should not have to make the decision on paying board members. We should all pay or not pay. But as it may be difficult to find the money, the projected costs are interesting.
Your article on paid board members (4 July, page 7) fails to identify the true cost. There are plenty of extras:
- large-scale voluntary transfer landlords often have larger boards
- appraisal, recruitment, advertisement, independent advice consultants and so on, which are all mentioned in the guidance
- officer time and board reviews of performance.
You could probably increase the proposed costs by at least 20%.
Also, no one has mentioned payments to councillor members. Are they to be paid twice?
