Mid Group: Making the most of modern methods of construction

Broxbourne School 2

Building Boardroom talks with Steven Hearn, chief executive of Mid Group, about how the company’s focus on MCC helped it soar from zero to a £95m turnover in six years

Modern methods of construction promise faster and more predictable project delivery, better quality and, crucially in this post-Brexit age, a hedge against skills shortages. That last issue, coupled with the impact of the pandemic on site practices, has generated renewed interest in MMC. But MMC solutions are often more expensive than traditional construction and MMC places a different discipline on project teams – for example, last-minute design changes can’t be made. Indeed, businesses need to rethink the way they work if they want to extract the maximum benefits from offsite solutions.

The Mid Group was set up in 2014, with former Laing O’Rourke project director Steven Hearn joining the company as a founding director in 2015. Turnover has gone from zero to £95m in six years. Hearn, who is now Mid Group’s CEO, explains how the company embraced MMC from the beginning to reduce risk and deliver better-quality projects more quickly.
