Bostik is now offering Hot Melt Butyl for Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) manufacture in fibre sealant drums, following extensive trials.
Pictured the drums’ successful performance is good news for IGU manufacturers as, being made from convolutely wound fibreboard instead of non-biodegradable steel, the drums allow for easier disposal or recycling.
The fibre drums also offer other advantages. The combination of light weight, impact resistance and a special exterior water-resistant coating means the drums are easier to handle, stack, transport and store. The silicone layer that lines each drum means that friction between the machinery and drum wall is minimised, making drum removal significantly easier. The tight seal created by the silicone liner during the dispensing process also allows for smooth, easy descent of the platen and prevents unwanted ‘flow-by’.
As well as improving line efficiency, the new ‘dual lid’ design of the fibre drums could help reduce unwanted wastage. The reason for this is that once ‘emptied’ the drums can be rotated to give access to any remaining sealant, thus keeping wastage down to an absolute minimum.
