Office lighting at Gateshead’s Civic Centre is turning green thanks to a major programme to replace and recycle its existing office lighting units.
The programme makes Gateshead Council the first local authority in the UK to recycle its redundant lighting equipment since the introduction of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive.
Gateshead is swapping more than 4000 office lighting units with more modern, more energy-efficient ones.
They are being replaced with custom-designed units using four 14 W T5 “daylight” tubes from Thorn that provide better illumination which mimics natural daylight.
The old units are put into a special skip provided free-of-charge by Lumicom, who operate a lighting fittings recycling scheme on behalf of the lighting trade.
