The Empire State Building is to have a $20m green makeover

The Art Deco skyscraper, built in 1931, is to be refitted to improve its energy efficiency as part of a $500m refurbishment. Planners claim the upgrades will mean a 38% reduction in energy consumption and annual savings of $4.4m. Lighting will be updated and the 6500 windows refurbished. Insulation will be added behind radiators, and the cooling system replaced. Planners hope the building will qualify for LEED gold status when the project is completed in 2013.
