The Major Contractors' Group (MCG) has issued a pre-qualification criteria document for subcontractors looking to work for MCG firms.
The document sets out the health and safety arrangements required by MCG members for those making tendering applications.

Brian May, chief executive of HBG and chair of the MCG health and safety steering committee, says: "Raising health and safety performance in our subcontractors is a key issue for all MCG members and we hope that publishing standard pre-qualification criteria will help subcontractors understand our requirements."

Once through pre-qualification, further project-specific health and safety information may be needed and contractors must comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

"The criteria are likely to be of interest to ECA members beyond those aiming to work for MCG companies," explains Alex Meikle, ECA's head of employee relations. "They indicate health and safety arrangements that are generally held to be good practice within industry and by the Health and Safety Executive." However, while it provides a useful reference, the document is not officially required outside of the MCG tendering process.

The document can be accessed free on www.thecc.org.uk in the what's new section.
