Commuters passing through London Bridge train station are seeing it in a new light thanks to a refurbishment project.
The new lighting scheme, installed as part of the platform refurbishment, has reduced energy consumption as well as improve lighting levels. The old fittings had reached the end of their life cycle and complaints about light levels were raised in a Southern Rail commuter survey. Lux levels were also too low in some areas for clear operation of cctv cameras.
Almost 170 of Sill Lighting’s fittings were used to relight platforms nine to 16. Sixty of the firm’s 460 Series projectors with 250 W metal halide lamps have been installed at the Town End of the station. Over one hundred of Sill’s 453 Series projectors fitted with 150 W metal halide lamps have been installed at the Country End.
The new lighting schemes will achieve 3·5 times the light levels of the previous installation using 20% fewer fittings and only 60% of the energy load.
First Engineering was m&e contractor on the lighting refurbishment scheme.
