I was rather disappointed to see Teamwork made easy (BSj 07/05) dedicating space to a ‘new’ approach [charrettes] when this has in fact already existed in the UK for some time.
It would make more sense to highlight the successes of our own models of lean construction, integration and collaboration and educate the unconverted to the benefits of these approaches. In the UK, we go even further by improving the leadership skills of those involved. This will be essential if we are to deliver the 2012 Olympics.
As a frustrated building services engineer, I made the decision many years ago to work only within a collaborative and facilitated approach to project design and delivery.
This requires more effort than just being a good designer – it requires a complete change in attitude and approach, which is often the most difficult part for people. However, the results produced by this way of working are often good and the whole project experience for all concerned is usually very good.
Using this approach may also go a long way to improving the image of the engineer as I have seen some rather ‘tired’ professionals transformed into dynamic leaders and innovators simply by letting go of the old values and ways of working.
