Masterplan of 43ha site should be approached as a blank canvas

The Royal Institute of British Architects and charity Land Trust have launched a competition to redesign the Cronton Colliery site in Knowsley, Merseyside.

The competition is to turn the 43ha site at the Colliery into a visitor centre and open public space while preserving its current biodiversity.

Euan Hall, chief executive of Land Trust, said: “The former Cronton Colliery is a fabulous space that has the very real potential to become a magnificent 21st century visitor destination for the North-west.”

“We believe that open spaces have the potential to be the catalyst for change and can impact far more than just the ‘environment’,” he added.

The site has been closed for 20 years and entrants teams, which must be led by architects, are encouraged to approach it as a blank canvas.

The closing date for submissions is 15 February.
