Town council commits extra cash to Glass Works scheme

Barnsley’s town council has committed an extra £70m to the revamp of its town centre.

The retail-led scheme, known as the Glass Works, is being developed by Queensberry.

It is located on a 3.8 hectare site around the town’s Cheapside street and will provide 590,000ft² of retail and leisure uses, including shops, restaurants, a multiplex cinema and a bowling alley.

It will also provide a new home for Barnsley’s historic markets, a central library and public realm.

The cash injection takes the council’s total investment in the scheme to £120m.

Alongside the funding announcement, development manager Queensberry also revealed the first occupiers would be Cineworld and Superbowl UK.
