Contractor’s joint venture with US firm B.L Harbert wins job

Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine has bagged the lucrative and highly sought after contract for the new US embassy in London, Building can reveal.

The US Embassy confirmed that the UK contractor has won the £650m job for the new embassy in partnership with US firm B.L Harbert.

Under the terms of the procurement UK contractors had to team with US firms to bid for the work.

Building understands that Sir Robert McAlpine in a joint venture with B.L Harbert beat off competition from US firm Caddell, teamed with Balfour Beatty; Clark, teamed with Mace; Walsh with Skanska; and Plaza with Laing O’Rourke.

The contract win comes after Sir Robert McAlpine won the £550m contract to build the headquarters for media company Bloomberg in London, as Building first revealed last month.

The new embassy is in the Nine Elms area of Battersea and work is expected to start in 2013 and be complete in 2017.
