The Information Commons at Sheffield University will officially open next month

A new £23m educational building designed by RMJM will open at Sheffield University next month.

The 11,500 sq m Information Commons provides 1,350 study spaces and houses 110,000 volumes of books.

The study area is clad in pre-patinated copper and internal and external areas are finished in dark grey terracotta tile. RMJM has specified fins on the north side of the building to minimise heat gain and solar glare.

RMJM director Matt Cartwright said: “Through six years of close collaboration between the University and design professionals we have created a stunning building that offers a bold statement and truly delightful innovative building for both the University and the City of Sheffield.”

The building was built in two phases and was completed in April 2007.
