US practice to oversee £500m development to help regenerate Indian city

American architect Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) is overseeing the £500m redesign of a Bombay shanty town.

The firm, best known for skyscrapers like the £2bn Burj Dubai, is designing new homes for 125,000 residents in the Santa Cruz area of the city.

Property developer Unitech plans to build a series of low-rise apartment blocks as part of a wider regeneration effort in the Indian city.

The scheme is the latest in a series of developments designed to upgrade the lifestyle of communities around India.

Last month, it emerged UK firm Gleeds had been appointed consultant on a project to build hundreds of new towns across the subcontinent.
