Danish architect is working with Arup to create folded-skin facade for energy firm's new HQ
Architect BIG has designed a skyscraper to be the headquarters of China's Shenzhen Energy Company.
The origami-inspired tower, called Shenzen Energy Mansion, will feature a sustainable facade that uses both passive and active measures to minimise energy use.
The facade will resemble a folded skin that shades the office complex from direct sunlight and integrates solar thermal panels, reducing the overall energy consumption of the building.
Danish firm BIG collaborated with Arup and Transsolar on the design for the 96,000m2 building, which will be located in the centre of Shenzhen.
Andreas Klok Pedersen, project leader at BIG, said: “The towers are based on an efficient and well-proven floor plan enclosed in a skin specifically modified and optimised for the local climate. By focusing on the envelope, the facade, we are able to enhance the sustainable performance of the building drastically.”
