Croydon council has given the go ahead to the first large scale housing scheme to comply with its 10% renewables obligation. The 360-home development will include the installation of 61 solar water heaters to the as well as photovoltaic panels on the four-storey buildings and 20 building-mounted micro wind turbines. The scheme is aiming to achieve an EcoHomes standard of excellent.
With an increasing number of local authorities now stipulating that at least 10% of a building’s energy requirement must come from site-based renewables, BSj is holding a one-day workshop looking at how this can be achieved.
Experts speaking at the workshop include Crispin Matson, managing director of Rybka, who has had first-hand experience of working under the new policy. Adrian Hewitt, principal environmental officer at the London Borough of Merton, and Eddy Taylor, head of environment and sustainability at the London Borough of Croydon, will also explain how their local councils introduced the 10% renewables obligation and why.
