The Home Office has earmarked a £10m fund to help police officers in Hertfordshire, Surrey and the Thames Valley buy homes on a shared-equity basis.
The fund is part of a package of measures to help the forces retain experienced officers and prevent a drain to areas with cheaper housing.

Under the scheme, Hertfordshire council will receive £2.7m, Surrey £3.6m and Thames Valley £3.7m to close the gap between experienced officers' salaries and the cost of semi-detached homes in each area.

Current pay for an experienced constable is £30,700. However, would-be homeowners in Surrey need an income of £41,933, those in the Thames Valley £37,457 and those in Hertfordshire £40,007.

The amount available to each officer, and the way the scheme is administered, will vary between forces.
