Potential criminals in Manchester city centre are now being monitored by up to 1,000 cameras operated from a Control Room that's said to be "the most advanced in the country".
Devised by Manchester City Council and National Car Parks (NCP), the CCTV system is so powerful that cameras can zoom in from 600 yards to identify suspected criminals, or provide images of criminal behaviour from five miles away that are acceptable as courtroom evidence. Operators in the Control Room monitor up to 180 high resolution digital images from 412 separate camera feeds, all displayed on broadcast-quality, backlit projection screens spread across an 18-metre monitor wall.
A detailed report on the £3.2 million state-of-the-art scheme will appear in the September edition of Security Management Today.
