An extra 979 homes are to be created for older people and adults with learning disabilities, it was announced on Wednesday.

The additional homes are to be provided as part of a £40m Extra Care Housing Fund unveiled by community care minister Stephen Ladyman.

Twenty-one schemes around the country will share in the pot – with the biggest beneficiary being Extra Care Retirement Village, Middle Warren, Hartlepool, which will be given £9.8m for a mixed-tenure scheme, including rent, shared ownership and outright sale.

Successful bids for providing care units came from organisations in the 13 areas of Bradford, Cheshire, Darlington, Darwen, Derbyshire, Ealing, Hartlepool, Leicester, North Yorkshire, Plymouth, Rotherham, Wakefield and West Sussex. Seven further successful bids will target improving facilities in existing sheltered housing and care homes.
