The British Library is seeking £4 million from the Government to replace its failing m&e services.
Just seven years after the £500 million building opened, costing three times original estimates and following substantial delays, the lighting and air conditioning systems are in need of replacement.

The library has applied to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for the funding. It is understood that a decision will be made in November.

Buro Happold has been appointed to compile a report to confirm the status of the equipment and work required. This report has already been sent to the Government and will be considered as part of a spending review that takes place every two years. Should the Government provide funding, the British Library will go out to tender for major capital works.

The original m&e works were carried out by Balfour Kilpatrick and Haden Young.
