The 2004 Trafalgar Square Christmas tree was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell for one week.

The tree was also decorated with energy efficient light bulbs reducing the energy consumption by 75% compared to previous years. Element Energy, an engineering consultancy in the low carbon sector assisted the London Hydrogen Partnership to provide the clean power. The partnership was formed in 2002 to help with the creation of a hydrogen economy in London and the UK through advocacy and demonstration projects. The Christmas tree is the first of these projects and the UK’s first use of a hydrogen fuel cell in a major public site.
