I was interested to read Una Buckley’s letter about people trying to get their first job in housing (22 October, page 21).
At Family, we recruit trainee housing officers solely through the Forum 3 recruitment fair and our own website. Instead of demanding housing experience and knowledge, we ask for skills such as effective communication, team working and the drive to deliver and please the customer.
We’ve recruited former teachers, council workers, shop assistants and even someone whose previous job was with the European Commission in Brussels.
Many took pay cuts in order to start a new career. Our success has highlighted not only what excellent people it is possible to recruit, but also how many people there are who would like to join the sector but do not feel it is possible without special initiatives.
