ABB has won a US$13 million order as part of a consortium that will provide power to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
Under an agreement with the Athens 2004 organising committee, ABB will design, build and install one of four 150 kV distribution substations that will cover power needs at venues throughout the capital.

The firm was awarded the turnkey construction for the substation at Vrilissia, which will include earthquake-proof Power IT gas insulated, high voltage switchgear. ABB is also to supply the switchgear for a second 150 kV substation.

The project is part of a programme to upgrade the regional power network and make it capable of responding to the increased needs of the Athens Games. It will also provide the infrastructure improvement needed to help the region's economic development following the Games.

Construction of the substation will be completed in early 2004.
