Its objective is to identify the major issues in making cities environmentally sustainable by around 2020. The book sets out some basic principles for design of future cities and uses case studies from the UK and Europe to illustrate how these ideas can be put into practice.

Some themes run through the book. One is that appropriate solutions depend on an understanding of context – environmental, historical, social, etc. A second is that the appropriate scale for solutions is something larger than the individual building – it could be the block, the neighbourhood, the city, the region. Also, solutions that require fewer resources are more likely to be robust.
