The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has announced details of its Spring Roadshows aimed at briefing the UK's private security industry community about the implications of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.
The association of chief ploice officers (ACPO) has welcomed a report published by Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabularies (HMIC) into Special Branch and Port policing in the UK, claiming that it recognises the "invaluable contribution" made by the Special Branch in the fight against terror.

Speaking about the report, Mike Hedges – head of the ACPO 'Terrorism and Allied Matters' business area, and chief constable of South Yorkshire Police – told SMT: "Many colleagues around the world look to the British Special Branch as an example of close co-operation between intelligence agencies and the law enforcement community. In the face of an enduring threat from terrorism, it's vital that we are equipped with the best operational response to that threat. The police service is therefore giving active consideration to the recommendations made by HMIC."

Hedges stressed that ACPO is "fully supportive" of the adoption of formal tasking arrangements and co-ordination within regions. "It will always remain vital that Special Branch maintains its links with local communities at all times."
