ACT Meters Ltd was formed in 1985 when Managing Director, David Grant came up with the idea of combining a radio link and a multimeter to enable remote circuit testing by one engineer. Incorporated into the design was a 'variable pitch tone generator' which enabled faults to be seen and heard. After years of development, Checkmate was launched in Security Installer in a competition with the first production model being offered as a prize.
David spent the next three years promoting the benefits of remote circuit testing by offering a free troubleshooting service to alarm companies throughout the UK. Averaging a thousand miles per week, David quickly gained invaluable experience in identifying all manner of intermittent and potential faults in troublesome systems. This knowledge gave him new ideas to develop a range of false alarm management products for the security industry, which included battery testers, multimeters, circuit filters and suppressors.

A catalogue of Alarm Circuit Test equipment was created and circulated to NSCIA listed alarm companies, as well as promotion at IFSEC and a series of Security Installer 'Bench Test' reviews. Now with vast experience in alarm fault finding, David decided to pass on his knowledge by offering alarm troubleshooting seminars around the country. Training expanded when Peter Moss joined ACT to provide practical one-day courses on mains compliance for fuse spurs and fire detection and specification. More recently, training has expanded by providing a 'fast track' City & Guilds 1851 qualification available on CD through Select Business Forms.

ACT recently won three prestigious industry awards in the UK and New York for their intelligent battery tester, training and website. TV comedian, Bob Monkhouse, and presenter of the e-commerce award commented that a special feature of the website was that "you didn't need an account to make a purchase and thought ACT stood for Any Cash Transaction".

As most Security Installer readers will know, David has provided free troubleshooting advice for many years and has gained recognition by the industry as a leading expert in his field. His control panel checklist and step-by-step test procedures have been adopted by hundreds of installers to aid troubleshooting and comply with alarm inspectorate requirements.

David is delighted to offer his services in the Security Installer 'Ask The Expert' so now is your chance to ask the expert!
