Lancaster University is to become the first university in England to install wind turbines.

The university is looking to install two 2.3MW wind turbines on its Hazelrigg site and has engaged consultancy Aecom to act as lead consultant on the proposed project.

The consultancy will advise the university on engineering issues in the lead up to the planning application being submitted towards the end of this year.

The university claims the installation could reduce its electricity consumption by approximately one third. This is equivalent to the residential requirements of all students who live on campus.

Aecom will also provide mechanical and electrical and civil and structural design services.

If the planning application is successful construction work is likely to start in early 2010.
