Draka’s Connecta modular fire performance wiring system and Firetuf alarm cables have been installed throughout the 5·6 km Dublin Port Tunnel, an underground twin dual-carriageway that links Dublin Port with Dublin Airport and is set to open later this year.
Draka supplied over 40 km of fire resistant Connecta cable and a further 20 km of Firetuf cable for the tunnel’s high-specification lighting system.
The zero halogen, low smoke, five-core Connecta cable was provided in a variety of predetermined lengths incorporating factory-fitted Connecta moulded sockets that eliminated the need for on-site joint forming. Quick-fit secondary outlets were taken from these sockets to individual pre-installed luminaires.
The solution had a significant impact on installation cost as it reduced the site labour requirement and all but eliminated waste. It also met the stringent fire rating standards laid down by the installation contractor, Mercury Engineering.
Connecta maintains the integrity of a circuit even if a local device fails in the event of a fire, insuring escape routes remain illuminated to avoid unnecessary panic.
