Anglia and Moat housing associations have won a competition to build homes with a £2.2m fund from the body in charge of Britain’s airports
The two will build homes in four local authority areas near Stansted airport: East Hertfordshire, Uttlesford, Harlow and Braintree.
The number of homes has not yet been decided, although a figure of around 3000 has been mooted.
Precise housing numbers will depend on the amount invested by the councils, housing associations and the Housing Corporation and this sum has not yet been settled. Figures are likely to be established in the next two months.
BAA paid the money as part of its planning gain obligations after it got permission to raise passenger numbers at Stansted to 25 million by 2010. The fund was not aimed at BAA employees but it will be up to councils to decide whether they should count as key workers.
Andy Doylend, executive director for business growth at Anglia Housing Group, said: “We are looking to make it less of a one hit and more of an ongoing programme.”
David Foden, regional development manager at Moat Housing Group, said: “Both Moat and Anglia have sites they are associated with which could bring forward units quite quickly.”
