Best thing about the job
The fact that it’s the not-for-profit sector and working for people.
Advice for people who want to get into housing?
Keeping an eye on the context is always useful. When you’re a member of front-line staff, it can be really off-putting if you don’t understand why the system is changing, especially given the pace of Supporting People at the moment. And always remember who the customer is.
What would you do if you were housing minister?
I would ensure all empty property was used effectively, and ban the unnecessary under-occupation of large homes – which I don’t imagine would go down well!
Favourite book
100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez or anything by Michelle Roberts.
Favourite film
Currently Requiem for a Dream, but I could list loads.
Favourite song
“Joga” by Björk or “Glory Box” by Portishead
Housing situation
I’m experiencing the housing crisis: I’m living with my mum as I’m priced out of the London market even though I’ve saved up a deposit. It’s a shame because I’m a Londoner born and bred.
