A 24 hour monitoring centre has been established by ntl at its Emley Moor site in Yorkshire as part of its new Visual Management Service (VMS). The service delivers remote visual surveillance enabling organisations to specify the activities they'd like to be notified about. The centre can be used to provide all day monitoring or an out of hours service – everything from intruder alarms to car dealers trying to improve forecourt service or distribution companies who suffer theft from parked vehicles. Pictures from VMS installations across the UK are transmitted to the monitoring centre over ntl's network using ISDN connections. "We've developed the whole package to provide organisations with maximum flexibility," said David Mackay, Head of Monitoring CCTV services at ntl. "Some companies may want to run their own monitoring, some will want ntl to take care of it out of hours, while others will need us to handle it on a full time basis. Every system will be different as we tailor it to meet the individual needs of each organisation." ntl delivers the full package. It designs, supplies and installs the system and the ISDN lines it operates over.

Arc upgraded
Protection One has carried out a major upgrade and refurbishment to its Alarm Receiving Centre. Following investment in building works, infrastructure and IT, the capacity of the centre has been increased fivefold and new staff have been recruited and trained. David Holt, Chief Executive of NACOSS, cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony. Said Keith Hobbs, MD: the development of our in-house ARC is a key strategic plank in Protection One's growth plans". The increased capacity would support the company's acquisition and dealer programmes and new investment in technology would enhance the company's reputation for "outstanding" customer service.
Software screens operators
High Wycombe Council has become the first local authority in the UK to select new CCTV control room staff by using Human Vigilance Assessment Systems software from Tavcom Training. The software, "S.A.M.A.E.", uses three 30 minute screen based tests to evaluate the capacity of personnel to perform effectively and consistently as control room operators. "Observer" is a single 20 min test for screening and shortlisting candidates.
