Arup has produced an independent report evaluating the costs and benefits of bidding for, securing and staging the 2012 Olympic games.
The Arup appraisal includes not only the immediate pros and cons, but also the wider benefits of the Games and the practical implications for London – including assessment of how transport, accommodation and security could be delivered.
The report concludes that the overall net financial cost would be an estimated £494 million. These costs, say Arup: "Will be exceeded by the attributable benefits of the Games if there is an effective concordat set up at the start of what is effectively a 15 year process." A decision whether or not to bid for the Games must be made in early 2003.
