The health & Safety Executive has come under fire from the boss of AsbestosRegister.com - a national database of property containing asbestos — for failing to endorse the national list.
Ross Udall, chief executive of the operation says lack of endorsement will affect the future of the site. The behaviour of the HSE he said, 'is not based on any rational analysis of our system, nor on an understanding of th benefits that the national database can provide.'

However, the HSE said it has been very fair in its dealings with Udall. 'We remain neutral on the matter and will do so until the Health & Safety Commission has clarified its position on this issue,' a spokesperson told TheFB.

The HSE said it has expressed its support for the national list, but stressed that it cannot give its guidance or endorse a company providing a specific commercial recording service.

AsbestosRegister.com and other national asbestos lists across Europe, including the one planned by the Luxembourg Committee, backed by AsbestosRegister.com fear they will crumble without regulatory backing.

The Health and Safety Commission's commissioner for the TUC, Owen Tudor, said that he believes AsbestosRegister.com could save lives, as it offers workers likely to be exposed to asbestos a way of finding out whether they are dealing with the substance.
