A housing association and a social care provider have joined forces to establish the first charitable company to address the support and accommodation needs of black and minority ethnic people with mental health problems.
BME landlord Presentation Housing Association and Advance, a national provider of support for adults with mental health problems or learning disabilities, have created the organisation Songhai.

Songhai, which has just received funding for three years from the Department of Health, will provide day care plus evening and out-of-hour care services, outreach support, respite care and relapse prevention services to people who have recently left hospital. Services will be specific to the needs of BME communities.

Research has found that people from BME communities have higher levels of mental health conditions, but have less access to care.
