AWE is set to become one of the first companies to use the new model partnering contract developed by the Movement for Innovation (M4I) ('New model army', EMC, November 1999).
Founded from the former Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, AWE proposes to use the new contract for the supply and maintenance of its air conditioning and ventilation equipment requirements.

The contract will provide for the setting up of a 'virtual company', which will follow the structure and arrangements conceived by M4I. This company will integrate the design and build disciplines involved in AWE's projects.

Describing the new model partnering contract as "radical", Martin Davis, vice president of Drake & Scull and leader of the M4I working party, says that if successful, the contract could reap considerable benefits. Profitability will increase as value is added for the client and waste eliminated.

Other companies which have expressed interest in the new partnering contract include NHS Estates and Glaxo Wellcome.
