A Tesco security officer who has challenged over 400 suspected shoplifters since he began working at the superstore’s Hayes outlet in January 2001 has been named Securicor’s Security Officer of the Year for 2002.

Former Pakistani Under-19s cricketer Ali Babar – who overseas a team of three officers at the store – has retrieved goods valued at over £50,000. Using a combination of the latest CCTV technology and “natural intuition” to clamp down on theft, Ali has also built up a strong rapport with the local police, working alongside them on operations aimed at cracking down on car crime.
