Energy minister Brian Wilson has committed £1.67 million to the world's first floating mini power station. This represents 60% of total cost.
The minister made the announcement during a visit to the Isle of Islay, an established wave power centre.
The new machine, developed by Wavegen, should be launched next summer from a new marine energy testing centre in Orkney. It will supply enough energy for 1400 homes.
