Balfour Beatty is using lightweight aggregate blocks from Tarmac Topblock in a new 200-bedroom Hilton hotel in Gateshead.
The building will contain nearly 29,000m2 of 100mm Hemelite standard-grade blocks and 140mm Hemelite paint- in 7N and 10N strengths.
Laid flat, the 100mm blocks form 215mm-thick solid party walls between the rooms. The Hilton's external walls and basement car park are built of the 140mm blocks and will be painted white.
Hemelite comes in solid, cellular and hollow formats and offers a strong background for wet finishes and fixings. All blocks weigh in at under 20kg per unit, which meets CDM recommendations.
