The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) has issued a warning to contractors and DIY enthusiasts about using non-certified cables on all sizes of electrical installation.
This follows the introduction of Part P of the Building Regulations and increased instances of non-conforming cable sales in the UK.
With the arrival of Part P at the start of 2005 there are now detailed requirements for electrical installations in dwellings, including the introduction of Competent Persons. However, this is not the only element of the Building Regulations that concerns the electrician. Regulation 7 requires the use of materials and products that are adequate and proper, and appropriate for the circumstances in which they are used.
BASEC advises that by installing cable bearing a BASEC certification, electricians will automatically demonstrate that Regulation 7 has been addressed.
The BASEC name appears on all cable sheathing and the logo is stamped on reels and packaging of all compliant cable. A list of BASEC approved cables is also available on the organisation’s web site. See www.basec.org.uk or call 01908 267300 for further advice.
