Ten key performance indicators (kpi) have been created for the m&e contracting industry.
Clients and contractors will now be able to benchmark their performance against cost and quality criteria.

The kpis have been launched by BSRIA under the Building Services Best Practice Programme. They cover client satisfaction with design, installation, service, o&m manuals, cost predictability, time predictability, defects, safety, productivity and profitability.

Performance on these criteria can be plotted on a wallchart, which is available in a KPI Pack free from BSRIA.

Benchmarking software, Contrack, has also been created to help firms analyse their performance on individual projects and over the long-term.

BSRIA is setting up benchmarking clubs, where specialist firms can benchmark themselves against a peer group. The club offers newsletters, workshops and a comparative database of performance measurements.

The membership fee is £1450/y. This incorporates BSRIA's Empower database and the Contrack software. Contrack on its own will cost £900.

Speaking at the launch, BSRIA's Chris Marsh reported that over 80% of clients had reported that they were "very satisfied" with contractors' performance on time, cost and productivity. "However, lowest price tendering and poor quality o&m manuals still dog the industry." he said.

BSRIA is holding a series of nation-wide workshops designed to help companies gain a better understanding of the kpis. These are being held in Nottingham (6 February), London (13 February), Glasgow (20 February), Bristol (27 February) Birmingham (13 March) and Manchester (20 March).
