Preferred contractors are increasingly being awarded contracts if they can demonstrate the lean construction practices which benchmarking can help to develop.
In Benchmarking in Construction, author Steven McCabe explains the theoretical background and offers practical guidance with extensive reference to case studies from best practice firms. It includes an explanation of total quality management, understanding and changing organisational culture, critical success factors and KPIs, how to benchmark customer satisfaction, and moving from theory to practice.
The author is senior lecturer in the School of Property and Construction at the University of Central England in Birmingham. He has conducted extensive research into quality improvement techniques and benchmarking, and has wide experience in industry with a number of contractors, and within the local authority sector.
The publishers claim that this is the first post-Egan book to look at benchmarking and KPIs in the construction industry.
In the foreword Gareth Thomas, manager of Construction Productivity Network, says that benchmarking is "the keystone of the great drive for improvement that has followed Sir John (Egan's) plea".
