Lovell Partnerships
A lively in-house magazine packed with informative stories on health matters like stress, safety tips and environmental guidance is one way Lovell sends the safety message to its workforce. Measures like this, which have been implemented in the past year in the company's drive to improve its health and safety strategy, caught the eyes of the judges. Lovell had a formal audit of its health and safety policy carried out early last year and has since been introducing a series of improvements. A new health and safety policy, training schedules and education initiatives have all been put in place. The company has also set down a series of key targets which include reducing its accident incidence rate, achieving a more qualified workforce and consulting site workers on health and safety matters in a three-tier system, based on project, work gang and individual.

Bellwinch has put in place a broad-ranging safety approach that has included investment in new equipment such as air mats, changes in work practice such as the installation of external grade flooring at joist level to provide a safe working platform for trades, and the introduction of an internal award scheme with a £1000 prize for the safest site. The company has its own site safety monitoring procedure, with resulting reports being analysed every six months to allow recurring problems to be addressed. The strategy is having a dramatically positive impact on the company's accident record.
