The Egan-spawned reform body Constructing Excellence (CE) underwent three dramatic changes as summer wound down and has set a new course toward becoming an influential club for paying members only.

First, in August, CE’s chief executive Dennis Lenard’s contract was not renewed and the job was given to Mace chairman Bob White.

Then last month CE merged with the Construction Clients Group, which promotes Rethinking Construction principles to its membership of big-spending repeat clients.

And finally late last month the all-new Constructing Excellence announced how much it would cost to be part of that club: £7000 a year for big companies (more than 500 employees) and half that for smaller ones.

For the fee, members will get discounted rates on business improvement tools, access to CE’s £1m-a-year research programme, cheaper coaching and consulting, and the chance to hobnob with other influential club members.

Will membership be a must-have for the industry’s larger companies? CE thinks so – we will have to wait and see.
