Are MPs really saying those with larger homes should not pay for them (“MPs and councillors blast move to raise rents on big homes”, 16 July, page 13)? I see no reason why someone with a small home should pay the same as someone with a large home.
That is very much more unfair than charging what the property costs, and housing costs more if it is larger.
Support for people who cannot afford to keep their families should be completely separate from how much rent they are charged for their home.
It makes perfect sense that those who can afford it should pay for it, and those who can’t afford it should be helped by the state.
Tenants of small homes should not get charged more to help pay for tenants of large homes, which is the only alternative.
The argument that it hits minority-ethnic families hardest is entirely spurious; it is racist to make the remark.
Large families may be more common in black and minority-ethnic communities, but that is not because of their ethnicity, it is because of their religious and traditional background.
It is more true to say that it hits some religious and traditional families harder than that it hits BME households harder, as BME households can, and do, leave traditional beliefs behind as much as white households have done over the past 50 years.
Get rid of racism in housing, and say it like it really is instead of trying to create political unrest.
