Birmingham council has approved plans for two pathfinder projects that could lead to the development of 35 community-based housing organisations.
The pathfinders are to be set up in the city's Northfield and Hodge Hill constituencies and are intended to provide a model for the development of other community-based housing organisations in the future.

The move follows recommendations made last December by the independent commission charged with drawing up a strategy for tackling Birmingham's housing problems after its failed stock transfer bid.

Recent estimates by the council suggest that up to 80% of the its housing stock is failing to meet the government's decent homes target.
