Birmingham council's new cabinet member for housing, Sandra Jenkinson, has vowed to regenerate the city's under-funded social housing and rebuild its communities, following the shock defeat of its stock transfer plan last month.
Her appointment at England's largest social landlord followed the local election defeat of Dennis Minnis, who had been the driving force behind the failed transfer campaign.

In a statement to Housing Today, Jenkinson said: "This is a positive time to become cabinet member for housing.

"Tenants have just voted by a clear margin to stay with the council for their housing service.

"Therefore my top priority is to continue to search for routes into capital funding as there has been severe under-funding of social housing for some decades nationally and much ground has to be made up."

She added that the tenants and staff needed to work with politicians to combat nuisance behaviour and crime and in order to work towards developing "flourishing communities".

Birmingham has appointed an independent commission to investigate ways to find more money to repair and improve its homes.
