BLASTOW: A 15-storey tower block in Plaistow, east London, was demolished on Sunday. It makes way for 200 new homes as part of a £113m redevelopment of the West Ham and Plaistow New Deal for Communities area. A further 56 flats, 12 shops and 64 maisonettes will be pulled down in the next 18 months. Controlled Demolition, a specialist contractor, used 15 kg of explosives to bring down the building. Residents of the tower have been rehoused and can expect to return to the new low-rise flats in 2005.
