Ah, Ken Thompson’s letter rings a bell (Life is too short, QS News, 12 August).

As an ex-QS, but still with some hard-learned skills, there is nothing like a bit of discipline in the profession. QSs may be scorned but just watch our project managers bow in deference when they want a little quantity surveying, a rough cost or maybe a bill produced in double quick time because an important client wants justification of certain figures contained in spread sheets and management documents.

It’s a bit like the underrated accountant: the QS is all right as long as he doesn’t run the show.
