Major brick manufacturers are engaged in a race to come up with new lightweight cladding versions of their staple product.
Brick slip cladding systems have been available in continental Europe for some years, but UK housebuilders have relied on traditional bricklaying. Now in the face of skills shortages, Building Regulations changes and the need to improve build efficiency using new technologies UK manufacturers are at last bringing Egan-friendly brick cladding systems to market.
Chelwood has just launched a brick cladding system, called techwall, which combines brick slips with a patented hanging rail and adhesive. Hanson has trialled its own TiS brick slip cladding with Persimmon Homes and Ibstock has recently completed a large-scale trial of brick slip technology with blockmaker Durox, which according to Daniel Bourne, national account manager (housebuilders) at Ibstock Brick produced excellent results.
