While the headlines in your feature on the Construction management degree were rather gloomy about the prospects foe education, may I point to at least one bright spot.

The College of Estate Management has a long tradition of offering accredited CIOB courses by distance learning, both in the UK and overseas. Our long-running Diploma was replaced in December 2002 by a BSC, offered jointly with the University of reading.

The new course has attracted some 60 students in the first year. This represents a threefold increase over the former Diploma, which is extremely encouraging and counter to the generally dismal trends you reported.

We believe that distance education offers a real opportunity for those who have already found the industry be an exciting and interesting place and who wish to enhance their careers. It would seem distance learning is an attractive proposition for both employee and employer
