A new extension, which forms one of four linked buildings on the site, has been fitted out to Grade A office standard by specialist contractor Interior. Occupant comfort and operating costs were principal demands for m&e contractor Shepherd Engineering Services when specifying air conditioning. The four-pipe system selected provides heating and cooling on all floors, with the horizontal Quartz units installed in the ceiling voids of the new extension and throughout the remainder of the building.
The units have a newly designed filter that is developed to reduce airflow by 80%, this can extend the filter service intervals to six times longer than comparative products. Compact, external rotor motor fans combine with free flow, stainless steel drain pans to give low maintenance and cost-effective running.
Shopping for value
Shopping for value: Dalkia has won a three-year contract worth over £330 000 per annum to provide technical services and building maintenance at Marks & Spencer Financial Services’ Chester headquarters. The 1980s office block is set in 25 acres of landscaped grounds and accommodates around 1800 staff. Dalkia was selected for its proactive approach to partnering. Its tasks will include managing systems and enhancing the performance of older plant and equipment. Future contract developments may include the firm’s environmental management services.Jolly green giant
Jolly green giant: Fibre optics have added drama to the imposing Hulk exhibit at Madame Tussauds, London. The Light Projects Group supplied 39 fittings from Roblon’s Compas range for the show. These are powered by ten FL 150 DMX light sources, with six-colour wheels and six-step dmx-controlled dimmers. The changing colours combine with other lighting to bring Hulk to life. Roblon uplighters were chosen for their ease of installation, low maintenance and ability to bear heavy pedestrian traffic.Light work
Waste disposal firm Envirolight has developed a processing system that recycles 97% of the waste light bulbs and tubes it collects. The firm carries out collection, fragmentation and removal of spent gas discharge lamps and linear fluorescent lights that contain hazardous mercury or sodium content. It uses an on-site fragmentation unit to carry out the first three stages of recycling on the customer’s site. Envirolight’s lamp collection and disposal firm and its system can help firms to meet the WEEE Directive. It also offers a bulk replacement service, with energy saving lights provided in place of recycled spent lamps.Tag access
Nottingham City Council’s vehicles have unhindered access to its main depot thanks to the installation of a Hyper X control system. The Nortech product was installed in the 14·5 acre site by Broughton Controls. Over 750 council vehicles and 500 staff cars use the site. The previous access control system suffered from interference from neighbouring telecomms poles and broadcasting frequencies. The Hyper X was chosen to overcome these issues as it operates using 2·45 GHz microwave technology, eliminating electromagnetic interference. Two Hyper X readers interfaced with Broughton barriers are installed at the entry and exit points. These read hands-free tags carried by personnel and in vehicles; there are no tag positioning constraints so they can be read at any angle.Source
